As the original shipmaster’s house for the shipyard in Hingham, and former residence of a well-known author, this is one of the signature houses in Hingham.  The owners were determined to preserve the priceless heritage of this house, but needed more flexible space for their young family.

We were able to convert several small rooms off the kitchen into a mudroom and rear entrance, and with a small bay addition we created a breakfast nook that expanded the kitchen space and opened it to the family room, the original “keeping room” of the old house.

We expanded some dangerously steep back stairs and by moving partitions we made a lovely sitting room upstairs as well.  We remodeled baths for the children’s rooms and by adding dormers front and back, we created a spectacular master suite on the 3rd floor with a bedroom, bath and office that take full advantage of the view of the lawn and gardens and the harbor and islands beyond.
