Transformation of
a Half Cape
The clients loved the area where their modest half Cape was located, but were afraid that it wouldn’t be roomy enough for them and their active little twins.
BEFORE
A new front porch adds welcoming charm and helps to connect the house to the neighborhood with many young families and children. A terrace and outdoor fireplace expand the living space outdoors.
BEFORE
Raising the ceiling and removing the side walls, created a spacious front foyer and graceful stairway.
The owners wanted to maintain a formal dining space, but wanted it to feel more open to the other rooms. Wider openings in the dining room walls were accented with columns.
An addition creates a soaring family living space with a partial cathedral ceiling and a fireplace that has a counterpart opening to the terrace outside.
A built-in bar is beneath a balcony that brings light to the upstairs hall.
The living room flows into the kitchen area, linked by a sunny breakfast nook.
BEFORE
The dormers that were added to the existing roof allowed room for an upstairs laundry and give added sculptural interest to the children’s bedroom ceilings.
Fortunately we were able to create 5 bedrooms as the twins were soon followed by another set of twins and a new baby!
BEFORE
It was equally fortunate that over the new three car garage we had designed a private master suite with a spacious bedroom, a balcony, raised ceiling, large walk-in closets and a marble bath with a steam shower and a Jacuzzi provide the necessary relaxation for Mom and Dad.
A back stairway leads to the master bedroom hallway, and a mudroom with a slate floor and a cubby for each member of the family leads from the garage to the kitchen.
