Restoration & Addition
This family transferred from another suburban town because they had always wanted to live in Hingham. They loved the proximity to the water and especially Hingham’s historic Main Street.
They have collected early American antiques and liked the fact that it is a very well preserved 18th century Cape set high on a stunning rocky site with lovely surrounding grounds and mature trees.

The house needed to be greatly expanded to accommodate the owners and their three small children. We reconfigured interior spaces, added dormers, a garage, a porch and a large master suite.
We were able to preserve some of the lovely cherry cabinetry in the kitchen, while expanding the space with a bay window and breakfast nook.
French doors open from the existing dining room to the new porch, and a new wall opening reveals a study tucked to one side.
The kitchen now opens into a larger family room and adjoining sun porch.
The master bedroom and bath as well as the laundry and storage closets are above the new garage overlooking the lovely grounds behind the house.
New dormers on the front of the house flood two children’s rooms with light from the southern exposure, and new dormers on the back allow room for an expanded bathroom with tub and shower.
We have raised the ceiling and allowed the shapes of the dormers to create a reflected sculptural effect in the bedrooms.
A narrow attic room has been dormered on both sides to create a sunny bedroom and bath for the third child.
A great effort was made to save every large tree on the property. The root systems were protected, and they were pruned and fed to avoid undue stress.
The integrity and style of the original Cape were preserved, yet the family has achieved light sunny living spaces with an open flexible plan.
